Read Earnings Transcripts

Financial numbers tell you what happened. Earnings calls tell you why it happened and what might happen next.

Listen to the Tone

Management tone can be as telling as the content. Are they confident? Evasive? Defensive?

Pay attention to changes in language. If they stop mentioning a specific metric they used to highlight every quarter, that's a red flag.

The Q&A is the Gold Mine

The prepared remarks are scripted and polished. The Q&A session with analysts is where you get unscripted answers. Look for:

  • Non-answers: "We'll get back to you on that" or "We don't break that out."
  • Detailed explanations: Management that takes time to explain complex dynamics often respects shareholders.
  • Forward guidance: Hints about future capex, margins, or demand trends.

Key Questions to Answer

After reading a transcript, you should be able to answer:

  • What are the biggest headwinds and tailwinds right now?
  • Is the company gaining or losing market share?
  • How is capital being allocated (buybacks, dividends, M&A, or reinvestment)?
